데이비드 호크니(David Hockney)(1937년 영국 브래드퍼드 출생)는 영국의 화가이자 판화가로, 캘리포니아 수영장 연작으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 대표작인 〈A Bigger Splash〉(1967, 캔버스에 아크릴, 96 × 96인치) 는 강렬한 햇살이 가득한 캘리포니아의 풍경과 라이프스타일을 담아낸 작품으로, 그를 1960년대 팝아트 운동을 대표하는 작가 중 한 명으로 자리매김하게 했다.
60년이 넘는 예술 활동 동안 호크니는 아크릴 회화, 판화, 사진 콜라주, 오페라 무대 디자인, 아이패드 드로잉 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 작업해 왔다.

2018년 11월, 〈Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)〉(1972) 는 미국 뉴욕의 크리스티(Christie’s) 경매에서 9,030만 달러(약 1,000억 원 이상) 에 낙찰되었으며, 이는 당시 생존 작가의 작품으로는 경매 사상 최고가 기록이었다.
David Hockney (b. Bradford, England, 1937) is a British painter and printmaker best known for his California Pool paintings — including A Bigger Splash (1967, acrylic on canvas, 96 × 96 in.) — sun-saturated acrylic works that captured West Coast life and made him one of the defining figures of the 1960s Pop Art movement. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Hockney has worked across acrylic painting, printmaking, photo collage, opera set design, and iPad drawing.
Hockney first gained critical recognition in 1961 with semi-autobiographical paintings depicting gay relationships, shown at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. He relocated to Los Angeles, California, in 1964, a move that proved decisive: the light, architecture, and uninhibited queer social life of Southern California became his defining subject. Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972, acrylic on canvas, 84 × 120 in.) — a double portrait set against a turquoise pool — became his most celebrated single work.
In November 2018, Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) sold for $90.3 million at Christie's, New York — the highest auction price ever achieved for a work by a living artist at that time.
